Reason 28: Paul Pierce climbing the record books
Paul “The Truth” Pierce is a Boston Celtics legend. Coming into his 14th season, all with Boston, Pierce has become a household name. He has been a starter every season since being selected 10th overall in the 1998 NBA draft. The ex-Jayhawk is a nine-time All-star and two-time NBA champion. The biggest accomplishment, however, is Pierce is third all-time on the Celtics career points list and counting, behind Larry Bird (21,791) and Kevin McHale (26,395). Pierce has 21,410 points. The 34-year old still has some seasons ahead of him to pass these two icons. Bird should obviously be surpassed even in this shortened 2011-12 season. Pierce’s ability to score, rebound and play defense, and a healthy dose of late-game heroics led to his emergence as a top player in the game. He averages 22.2 points per game, and at that mark he should surpass Bird and leap into second after 20 games, if he stays healthy, which hasn’t been a problem throughout his rugged career. It starts on Christmas Day against the Knicks, so stay tuned early on and watch the man climb the ladder into the record books.
